Each year on one day restaurants in Vancouver, Whistler, Vancouver Island, along with restaurants across the United States participate in Dining Out For Life, an annual fundraising event which raises money for AIDS service organizations. Participating restaurants donate 25% of proceeds from lunch and/or dinner food sales to support people affected by HIV/AIDS. In Vancouver that money goes to registered not-for-profits Friends For Life and A Loving Spoonful. All donations directly benefit the programs and services they provide free-of-charge. It’s a great cause and I participate every year.
This year Amber, Athena, Stephen and I picked Forage for our Dining Out For Life restaurant location.
We started the evening off right with a glass of bubbly:
And an order of the best ever pan bread in cast iron with local cheddar, spicy honey:
There are a lot of new menu items at Forage, this conifer gnocchi with brown butter sauce was amazing:
The beetroot and goat cheese mille-feuille with ricard granita, puff pasty, maple vinegar glaze is also new and a very interesting combination of flavours, textures and temperatures. Very original!
Another new dish is the chermoula-spiced ancient grains with chickpea tempeh mousse, root vegetables, meyer lemon yogurt chips, mint panna cotta.
And of course there are old favourites on the menu, one of mine being the famous grilled kale salad with hazelnuts, brie and honey dressing, caramelized apples. The best kale salad in Vancouver!
There are new desserts but again we settled on an old favourite, the old fashioned apple pie with compressed apples, whisky caramel. So good!
It was the perfect end to an enjoyable evening supporting a great cause. Consider participating next year, you can make a difference, one bite at a time!
